Abstract

Background: Knowledge of dental health is a term used to tell someone about the experience of the results of dental health as well as one of the determinants in shaping a person's behavior. Oral health is a state in which good oral cavity free from accumulation of plaque, debris, stain, caries, as well as material alba. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between oral health knowledge with caries status (DMF-T) and plaque index (BBPI) on student of FKIK UMY class of 2013 that treated with fixed orthodontic appliance. Research Design: This study is an analytic survey with cross sectional design. Purposive sampling technique with sampling of 20 students of FKIK UMY class of 2013 that treated with fixed orthodontic appliance. This study used a questionnaire on oral health knowledge, and an assessment of the status of caries (DMF-T) and plaque index (BBPI). Data were analysed using Spearman's correlation test with a significance level of 5%. Results: Results of statistical tests on the relationship of oral health knowledge with caries status showed a correlation coefficient = 0.043 (p <0.05). While the results of statistical tests on the relationship of oral health knowledge with plaque index showed a correlation coefficient = 0.493 (p <0.05). Conclution: There is no relationship between oral health knowledge with the status of caries (DMF-T) and plaque index (BBPI).
