KONTRUKSI "BARAT" DAN "TIMUR" DALAM FILM ENGLISH VINGLISH

This study analyzed a Bollywood film titled English Vinglish, directed by Gauri Sinde. The purpose of this study was to determine how the construction of the "West" and "East" represented in this film. The method used in this study is Semiotics which will look at how the construction of the "West" and "East" represented by the signs in every scene. This film tells the story of Hindi culture and western culture are presented in the context of India as the country with the memory of British colonialism. The film English Vinglish strongly related to postcolonialism studies that discuss the relation colonial state and the colonized countries after the end of the colonial era. From of colonialism that has ever happened in India, it is forming a construction of "the West" and "East". The results showed that this film represents how power relations of colonialism are still found in this film, which ultimately makes the stigma that always wins the West and the East have always lost.
