Abstract

English becomes imperative to learn by the people who are involved within tourism. The quality of pedicab drivers in speaking English to communicate directly with foreign tourist could be a crucial part to help the tourism in Yogyakarta. This study explores how the pedicab drivers learned English as a second language to communicate with foreign tourists, supporting factors, and also the impeding factors when learning English. Five participants were chosen directly from Sosrowijayan tourism area; all the participants were those who joined English training organized by the Tourism Department. This study was conducted through interviews. The study shows eight learning strategies used by the pedicab drivers in learning English. Pedicab drivers learned English independently and getting improvement after joining English training by Tourism Department. There were also four factors supporting pedicab drivers in learning English. One of the factors that supported pedicab drivers to learn English was job necessity. All of the pedicab drivers should deal with a lot of foreign tourists and they had to use English as a communication language. The last, this study gained six impeding factors faced by the pedicab drivers when they were learning English. One of the pedicab drivers’ obstacles when learning English was because they were too old to learn second language.
