THE STRATEGIES OF JAMAAH TABLIGH TO SPREAD ISLAN IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

The history of Islam is the history of movement. This time Islam becomes the biggest religion in the world. What has been reached by Islam can not be separated from the movement which occured inside the religion. One of the movements which played an important role in spreading Islamic teaching is Jamaah Tabligh. Jamaah Tabligh is the movement which comes from Mewat, India in 1920, which was founded by Maulana Ilyas. Along with its controversy and its rivalry with the other Islamic movements, this movement could reach almost all parts in the world and Southeast Asian particularly. This udergraduate thesis aims to discuss about the strategies of Jamaah Tabligh to spread Islam in Southeast Asia, such as how to deal with the situation in Southeast Asia known as one of the plural areas, how they dealt with the other movements which banned their activities and the other strategies. In this research, the writer used an extensive and relevant published materials such as books, journals, reports, newsletters, official websites and other sources on a wide variety of topics related to the subject of the topic. This study has shown that Jamaah Tabligh used three strategies which are the policies of Jamaah Tabligh do not affiliated with any political aspects, hard way of Islamic teaching through modified “Khuruj” activities, and soft way of Islamic teaching through transformation activities to urban sufism to spread Islam in the world generally and Southeast Asia particularly.
