Abstract

This study aimed at determining and explaining the perceptions of
Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta students towards female students who
wear cadar (a cloth that covers the face leaving only the eye part. This study used
a qualitative method. The data collecting was done by observation, interview, and
documentation. In this study, the respondents were selected by the researcher using
a purposive sampling technique. They were students of the Faculty of Islamic
Religion, Islamic Education Study Program.
The results of this study indicate that: 1) Cadar is a cloth that covers the
face that only shows the eyes. 2) The background of the PAI UMY students in
wearing cadar is because they know the law of wearing cadar based on Al-Qur'an
and Sunna. 3) There are positive and negative perceptions of UMY students towards
PAI students who wear cadar. 4) The difficulties experienced by female students
who wear cadar include negative views towards them, differences in ideology and
perceptions, as well as physical actions. 5) The strategy undertaken by female
students who wear cadar in overcoming the most important difficulties is by
communicating with those around them so that the negative views of the cadar will
disappear by itself
