Abstract

According to the Global Carbon Project, CO2 emissions in Indonesia are increasing
every year. In 2017, there was an increase of CO2 emissions by 4.7% from the
previous year. This phenomenon encourages business initiatives that concentrate
on environmental sustainability. Banks as financial sector institutions need to carry
out environmental risk management called ‘green banking’. Green banking is an
environmentally friendly, caring and responsible bank while still paying attention
to environmental aspects in running its operations. In implementing green banking,
Islamic banking can enhance its reputation as a bank that cares about the
environment. This study aims to describe the initiation and implementation of green
banking practices and to find out its effects on several aspects: social,
environmental, economic, human resources and ethics. This study uses the primary
data with quantitative descriptive studies and multiple linear regression to test the
research hypothesis. The technique used was the sample random sampling
technique with a sample size of 66 respondents. The results of this study indicate
that the implementation of green banking from all aspects has a fairly high average
value (Mean 24.06). In this study, the economic aspects (Sig. 0.024 <0.05) and
human resources (Sig. 0 <0.05) are significant, but on the social aspects (Sig.
0.255> 0.05), the environment (Sig. 0.092> 0.05) and ethics (Sig. 0.622> 0.05) were
not significant towards the initiation and implementation of green banking.
