Abstract

This research is aimed at knowing the background of ‘Uqūd al-Lujjain
book writing, examining the arguments of gender bias written in the book of
‘Uqūd al-Lujjain, and finding out the effects of gender inequality in the book '
Uqūd al-Lujjain towards the household ethics.
This research is a library research using a qualitative approach as a
reference in finding primary and secondary data. The primary data were
obtained from the book of Uqūd al-Lujjain itself. Meanwhile, the secondary
data were obtained from various sources of literature such as scriptures,
books, journals, papers, and other sources related to the research topic. In
addition, documentation technique was also used in this research as the data
collection technique. The obtained data were reduced and the problems were
taken and later analyzed descriptively referring to the theory of gender
analysis of Harvard model.
The findings show that the book of ‘Uqūd al-Lujjain emerged as a
request of friends and the students of book authors in the breadth of
problematic conditions where patriarchy culture still dominated various
aspects of community life at the time. The arguments in the book of ' Uqūd alLujjain eventually are filled with gender bias, such as the view of wife as a
prisoner of husband, women have lacks of common sense and religion, and
women's domestication resulting from the ban of leaving the house without
husband’s permission. The impacts can be seen from the marginalization of
women, stereotype (negative labeling), subordination, and violence against
women
