Abstract

ABSTRACT

Aloe vera has been used traditionally as medicinal plant in Indonesia. The
extract etanol of Aloe vera has an active component likes Aloctin A, flavonoid,
saponin, Aloe emodin and Aloe lectins substance which have an anticarcinogenic
property. Activity of Aloe vera was reported to inhibit cervix cancer, sarcoma,
leukemia and fibrosarcoma in human being.

This study was focused on the anticarcinogenic activity of ethanolic extract
of Aloe vera in suppressing invasion of Oral Tongue Sguamous Cell Carcinoma
(Sp-C1) in vitro.

The examination of cellular invasion by Boyden chamber assay was

carried out with ethanolie extract of Aloe vera in dose of 25mg/ml, 50mg/mi,
75mg/ml and 100mg/ml. In Boyden chamber assay, cultured Sp-C1 cells were
plated on the upper chamber and ethanolic extract of Aloe vera on the lower
chamber, between both of them inserted policarbonat membrane. After had
incubated for 24 hour, policarbonat membrane removed and stained by
hematoxilin. Invasion cell was measured using light microscope with 100x
magnitude.
The study showed that Aloe vera in 25 mg/ml (p-0.032), 50mg/ml :
(p-0.000), 75mg/ml (p-0.000) and 100mg/ml (p-0.000) doses had an ability to
inhibit invasion of Sp-CI cells,with significancy px0.05. Therefore, dose of
100mg/ml was found to have the high effective suppressing invasion of Sp-C1
celis.

It can be concluded that Aloe vera significantly inhibited the invasion of

Sp-CI1 cells.
