Abstract

Poetry is a part of literary works that consists of feelings or ideas with the use of rhythm and style. Writing poetry is usually seen as a difficult activity for students, especially in foreign language they are currently studying. This leads to teachers not considering the use poetry as their option of teaching materials. The purposes of this study were to find out how writing poetry helps students to express themselves based on their experience in the Literary Appreciation course and to find out the creative process that the students used in writing poetry in the Literary Appreciation course. The design of this research was descriptive qualitive with interview as the research instrument to collect the data. The research was conducted at one of the private universities in Yogyakarta with six students of the English Education Department in batch 2018 as the participants. There are five findings regarding the use of poetry for self-expression and five findings regarding students’ creative process activities. The findings showed that poetry provides a place for students to reflect on their feeling, provides a place for students reflect on personal experience, helps students to gain self-awareness, helps students to find freedom of expression, also helps students to find a tool for future self-expression. Furthermore, there also findings of the pre-writing activities in the classroom, pre-writing activities outside the classroom, writing the poetry activity, receiving feedback for the first draft of poetry as post-writing activity, also editing the poetry activity of the students.
