Abstract

Background: Burns are an emergency condition caused by contact with fire, steam or hot liquids, chemicals, electric currents, electromagnetic energy, and radiation. According to the American Burn Association (2016), there are 486,000 burn patients who receive medical attention each year. When a person is exposed to burns, the first treatment will determine the level of mortality or morbidity. So in this case housewives must be able to do the first treatment for burns properly. The results of research by Alomar, et., al, 2016 stated that the percentage of treatment carried out by mothers was 41% treating burns with cold water although 97% of them did not have knowledge about duration of giving cold water compresses. Another 32% treated burns with honey, egg whites, toothpaste, flour, tomato paste, yogurt, and tea. Purpose: The purpose of this literature review is to find out how the description of housewives in carrying out the first treatment for burns properly. Method: This study uses an article library source, which searches through the ProQuest database and Google Scholar. Results: The description of the burns treatment by housewives is explained in four points. Tthe characteristic of the causes of burns, pre hospital treatment of burns, appropriate burn treatment measures, and the success factors of housewives in the first treatment of burns. It is recommended that housewives can carry out the first treatment of burns properly to avoid the occurrence of mortality and morbidity in the subsequent treatment process.
