Abstract
Personalities are the special characteristic of an individual. One’s personalities form through the parents’ habit. A problem such as broken home negatively affects the child. However, not all broken home kids are problematic. This research was intended to reveal: (1) the profile of broken home children at Muhammadiyah Prambanan Orphanage, and (2) the changes of broken home children’s personality at Muhammadiyah Prambanan Orphanage. This field research was done at Muhammadiyah Prambanan Orphanage with descriptive qualitative approach. The participants were chosen using purposive sampling technique. The data were obtained through observation, interview, and documentation. The data were then analyzed using techniques of reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The results revealed that there are changes on the kids’ personality: (1) Basically, all the five children coming from broken home families felt that the parents’ divorce was something ordinary which they needed to patiently face. The divorce happened when they were younger and did not understand the situation well. As the parents separated, they were taken care and raised by their nearest relatives such as the mother, grandmother, or other family members who loved them. It resulted in the fact that they were raised well. (2) When they started to live in the orphanage, the kids did not change much, except the fact they were slow to adapt and slow to discipline. Meanwhile, they were able to be honest, smart, emotionally stable, have the willingness to share, responsible, hardworking, humble, and patient. In short, they were much better than who they were before. The mischief they committed were the same as other students which were regarding disobeying schools’ rules, spending too much time to hang out, saying rude words, and having a fight with other kids.
