Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the reasons behind the severance of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran in an international political economy review. The method used in this research is descriptive analytical method and historical analysis method. This study shows that Saudi Arabia's decision to sever diplomatic relations with Iran with reasons. First, Saudi Arabia views Iran as a threat in the competitive oil trade. Oil Competition between Saudi Arabia and Iran which are two oil producing countries in the Middle East. Iran, which also trades oil, is a threat because Saudi Arabia is a key player in the world in economic and political development. Second, because of Iran's potential advantages as a small country that used to be under Saudi Arabia, Iran's economy is growing very rapidly. Since their economic diversification, Iran has become one of the richest countries in the world. With a rapidly growing economy, Iran's relations with neighboring countries are also developing. Iran's growing influence in the Gulf region makes Saudi Arabia anxious. It is not impossible that its position as the dominating country in the Gulf Region will be replaced by Iran if this continues. Therefore severing diplomatic relations with Iran is a step to prevent the development of Iran's economic influence in the Gulf Region.
