Abstract

This study discussed how the representation of romanticism of young love in the 90s was depicted in Dilan 1990 movie by Fajar Bustomi which was released in 2018. This film is an adaptation of the novel entitled Dilan: Dia Adalah Dilanku Tahun 1990 by writer Pidi Baiq, published in 2014. The novel and the movie tell the love story of two high school teenagers with a background time in 1990. This movie is the highest-grossing film with an audience of 6.3 million viewers. This number puts this movie on the second highest-grossing film of all time in Indonesia. The research method used in this research is the two-orders of signification method of semiotic analysis from Roland Barthes, there are denotation level and connotation level then connected with existing myths. Several appropriate cut scenes of the movie will be analyzed to uncover the meaning and signs of romantic behavior carried out by the main character in Dilan 1990 movie. The theory used in this study is movie as a medium of communication, representational practices in movies, romantic behavior, the dynamics of adolescent romance in 90s, and semiotics. The results of this study showed how the romanticism of young love in the 90s in movies Dilan 1990 was represented in accordance with Erich Fromm's thoughts on the basic elements of love. The element consists of (1) the presence of care, (2) the behavior of responsibility, (3) respect, and (4) having knowledge. Based on this, the romantic representation of 90s young love depicted in movies Dilan 1990 is an active action involving each other parties for the sake of continuity of romantic relationships.
