Abstract
Background: The term surgical site infection (SSI) is used to cover all surgical
wounds and infections involving all limbs and body cavities, bones, joints,
meninges, and other tissues involved in the surgery. Some of the factors that
influence the occurrence of SSI are the type of operation, length of operation, the
patient's condition, comorbidities, and irrational administration of antibiotics.
One way to reduce the risk of SSIs is to use prophylactic antibiotics. Prophylactic
antibiotics are antibiotic that given before, during, and up to 24 hours after
surgery to prevent SSI. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of
prophylactic antibiotics that are used in the surgical ward of RSUD Kota
Yogyakarta from January to July 2019.
Methods: This study was quantitative and was conducted using observational
descriptive with cross sectional approach. The samples taken from this study were
185 patients. The sampling method was a simple random sampling technique. The
data obtained from the patient's medical records in the form of patient
characteristics, the profile of the use of prophylactic antibiotics in the patient, and
the rationality of the use of prophylactic antibiotics were analyzed descriptively
with the frequency table of the Gyssens category 0 - category VI
Results: The use of prophylactic antibiotics based on the Gyssens category
obtained rational antibiotics (category 0), namely 14 patients (7.6%), and 171
patients (92.4%) received irrational antibiotic prophylaxis. Patients who received
irrational antibiotics can be divided into two categories, namely category I as
many as 97 patients (52.4%), and category IV A as many as 74 patients (40%).
Conclusion: Evaluation of the quality of prophylactic antibiotic use in patients in
the surgical ward of Yogyakarta City Hospital for the period January - July 2019
is irrational based on the Gyssens algoritm..
