Abstract

Background: Nosocomial infections are a global problem and cover about 9%
(variation 3% - 21%) of more than 1.4 million hospitalized patients worldwide. This
figure was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) from the results of
its survey in 14 countries, covering 28,861 patients in 47 hospitals located in 14
WHO regions in 1986. The losses caused by nosocomial infections weigh heavily
on both hospitals and patients. The most common nosocomial infections are the
result of catheter insertion. Caterization is one of the most frequently carried out
health interventions. Bladder catheterization carries a high risk of urinary tract
infections (UTIs) and is considered to be one of the main causes of nosocomial
infections. The high rate of infection after catheter placement is also a result of the
difficulty of controlling, maintaining and replacing catheters in patients who
require permanent catheter placement. According to Sukandar (2006), UTI ranks
the second most common infection after respiratory tract infections with a total of
8.3 million per year. 90 Urinary tract infections in Indonesia and their prevalence
is high. The number of UTI sufferers in Indonesia is 95 cases / 104 population per
year or around 180,000 new cases each year.
Objective Analyzing the relationship between catheter placement and the incidence
of urinary tract nosocomial infections in hospitalized patients at Condong Catur
Yogyakarta
Methods: This study used a cross-sectional analytic observational research design
with the total sampling method with a sample of 98 inpatients for the period August
2019-July 2020 at the Condong Catur Hospital, the data was collected using
medical record data of patients who had UTIs or those who had catheters installed.
Results: Of the 98 patients hospitalized at Condong Catur Hospital, 18 patients
experienced UTIs and 10 of them were caused by catheter insertion. The bivariate
analysis in this study compared the two groups of couples and showed a significant
relationship between catheter use and urinary tract infection. This is indicated by
a p value <0.05
Conclusion:. Catheter placement in inpatients mostly causes patients to have
nosocomial urinary tract infections.
