Abstract

In the middle of the modernization advances, industrialization and globalization can affect the personality pattern of an urban society layer specifically and public in general resulting in differences in various aspects. One of them is the difference in understanding Islam. Subsequently, a Manhaj Salafi group emerges having the understanding and the orientation which follow the paths, methods, and ways to hold Islam done by the previous Muslims in the past having different characteristics compared to other Islamic schools or organizations. Therefore, this study aims to find out the perceptions of the urban society on the Manhaj Salafi Group in As Syukur Foundation Kebumen. This research used descriptive analysis with qualitative approach. The data collection techniques were carried out through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Meanwhile, the data analysis technique was done through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that urban society in Kebumen Subdistrict has different ways of thinking and characteristics. In other hand, in general, the society has a low Islamic knowledge level. Thus, it makes them easily accept new different things in Islam as long as they do not interfere any community activities and do not violate any of Islamic religious norms in general. Specifically, they have a different point of view toward the Manhaj Salafi Group in Asy Syukur Foundation Kebumen as a result of various factors such as experience, background, personality, interests, and so on.
