Abstract

This paper investigates the factors that cause the government to experience difficulties in dealing with the wave of illegal migration and the efforts in determining preventive measures against illegal activities on the Indonesia-Philippines border. It also analyses the diplomatic relationship between Indonesia and the Philippines in dealing with border issues, the Indonesian diaspora in the Southern Philippines, and illegal migration. Using a qualitative approach, this research explores government and community perceptions of the challenges in border management and the socio-economic impacts of illegal migration. Methods included field observations and in-depth interviews with relevant resource persons, including diplomatic officials, security authorities and affected communities. The data collected provides a comprehensive understanding of border dynamics, migration management policies, and the effectiveness of bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and the Philippines in tackling this issue.
