Abstract

Background: Online game addiction is a condition where a person is bound by strong habits and it is difficult to let go of online games and causes dependence to be able to continue playing. Communication within the family is defined as communication between parents and children and husband and wife, with the aim of being a forum for exchanging ideas, teaching personality values, and solving problems. A student including overseas tends to have a rare relationship with their parents due to distance, time and so on. Students who experience online game addiction also experience decreased relationships with their parents because students are too focused on playing online games and don't want to be disturbed. This makes communication between students and parents less and less. Research Objectives: the purpose of this study was to determine how the communication experience of students who experience online game addiction with their parent. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Retrieval of data in this study using interviews, observation and documentation. The number of participants in this study was eight people who were determined by the snowball sampling method. The data analysis used was the Giorgi method, starting from conducting interview transcripts and reading all the results of the transcripts, grouping participant statements into keywords and categories, linking those that could fall into sub-themes, and from these results made consistent statements about the participants' experiences so that they become great theme. Results: The results of this study indicate that the communication experiences of students who experience game addiction with their families vary widely, this can be seen from the seven themes that emerge, namely 1) The environment influencing students to play online games; 2) The indifference of students and parents to the problem of online game addiction; 3) Student understanding. about the importance of communication with family; 4) The intensity of student-family communication; 5) Changes in student-family communication due to online game addiction; 6) The impact of parenting on students' behavior in playing online games; 7) Online game addiction is the cause of student-parent problems. Conclusion: The behavior of playing online games in college students is formed due to various things that arise from curiosity to experimenting in playing online games so that it causes changes in a person that causes it.
