Abstract

Background: : Orthodontic wire has several types such as beta titanium, stainless steel, and titanium nickel. Saliva has a normal pH condition, but several factors can affect the condition to be acid or basic. Objective: to find out whether or not the release of nickel-made orthodontic wire nickel ion is immersed in normal pH and acidic. Method: laboratory experimental method, with a cross sectional research design. The number of samples used in this study are 40 orthodontic wire samples made from nickel titanium which are divided into 10 groups. Then immersion using saliva pH 6.75 and pH 4.8 for 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, and 28 days. The data obtained were analyzed using Independent T test Results: Results performed on day 1, day 7, day 14, day 21, and day 28 experienced ion release. Conclusion: titanium nickel orthodontic wires which are immersed undergo ion release. The longer the immersion takes, the more nickel ions are released.
