Abstract

Background: Indonesia is the most population in Southeast Asia and has at 265 million people. The number of cigarette smokers in Indonesia currently ranks as the third largest in the world after China and India, the prevalence of cigarette smoking in Indonesia is 35 percent of the population, or approximately 75 million people (MOH, 2011). According to data cartained in the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS, 2015), the population of adult male population who smoke cigarettes in Indonesia is 67 percent, and 3 percent for women. Objective: This study aims to describe and analyse the nature of students motivation to cease smoking among students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Methods: This study is a quantitative descriptive study. The sample in this study were 35 respondents with sampling obtained through the purposive sampling technique. Results: This study shows that smoking cessation motivation in students at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta is moderately high at (57,1%) of respondents. Conclusion: Based on data attained in this study, the level of motivation among students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta to cease cigarette smoking is moderately high (20, 57,1%, n=35).
