Abstract

A song is a fusion of sound created by musical instruments, the vocalist and the important part is the lyric of the song. Besides of being an entertainment purposes, a song can also be used as a media to criticize the social; by the song lyrics contained a meaningful message in it. Social critics here can be addressed to criticize the government bureaucracy, politics, until the subject of human rights violations. Just as is done by a Band which is Efek Rumah Kaca, on every song they made, there were always a message that is contained of the meaning value and contained social criticism in each lyrics. This study was conducted to find out the social critic representation contained in the lyrics of songs created by Efek Rumah Kaca Band. This research used descriptive qualitative approach with Roland Barthes method. The object of this research is three lyrics of the song by Efek Rumah Kaca Band, with the title are Merah, Jingga, and Kuning. The results of the study showed that the lyrics of the song of Efek Rumah Kaca Band with the title are Merah, Jingga, and Kuning have represented social criticism in the lyrics of the song. Social criticism in it includes social criticism about politics in Indonesia, human rights violations or human rights and about the diversity that exists in Indonesia. Suggestions for the music industry in Indonesia in the future, is to improve the quality and capability in music sector, so that the song that created has a strong message in it.
