Abstract

The bilingual or multilingual community uses code-switching (CS) to transition from first language to second language. CS can also be referred to as a process, depending on whether it is used to meet communication needs or other needs by translating from the second language to the first language. The study is descriptive qualitative research. For data collection, three English Language Education Department teachers and three English Language Education Department students were interviewed. Several findings were obtained while researching this study. The first discovery is the reason behind teachers’ use of CS. There are three discoveries, namely, to ensure that students understand learning materials, to encourage students-teachers camaraderie, and to create conducive learning environment. The second finding is that CS benefits students in two ways: they help students understand learning materials better and they enhance students’ vocabulary. As a result, three findings are related to the reasons teachers use CS in EFL classes: code-switching ensures students understand learning materials, code-switching improves student-teacher camaraderie, and code-switching creates a conducive learning environment. Furthermore, three findings are related to students' perceptions of how teachers' use of CS benefits them, namely, code-switching helps students understand learning materials and code-switching improves students' vocabulary
