Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is acknowledging the efforts made
by Philippines to overcome the Abu Sayyaf Group. The Abu
Sayyaf is a separatist group that carries out its actions by
attacking civilians by bombing and kidnapping. After the 9/11
attacks, the Abu Sayyaf became a separatist group as well as
a dangerous terrorist group. This is because there is a link
between the Abu Sayyaf and the Al Qaeda group, which was
the main actor in the 9/11 attacks. This paper will focus on
2014 – 2016, because in 2014 – 2016 Abu Sayyaf attacks
increased. The Philippines overcomes this problem by
implementing a counter-terrorism strategy. In the counterterrorism strategy, there are three strategies, namely
prevention, protection and response.
