Abstract
Two-phase flow is part of a multi-phase flow that involves two different states of matter
in a stream. As the development of the application of two-phase flow is increasingly found in
everyday life, such as: heat exchangers, heat exchangers, boilers, piping systems and others.
This study aims to determine the characteristics of flow patterns, flow pattern maps, pressure
gradients, and the void fraction of two-phase flow in mini pipes.
The research was conducted using a test section in the form of a glass pipe with a
diameter of 1.6 mm at a pipe position of 20 degrees to the horizontal. The working fluid used is a
gas fluid in the form of dry air and a liquid fluid in the form of a mixture of 65% distilled water,
30% glycerin, and 5% butanol. The superficial velocity used is the superficial fluid velocity (JL)
0.033 – 4.935 m/s and the gas superficial velocity (JG) 0 – 66.6 m/s. Flow pattern data is
obtained directly from video recordings taken using a high-speed camera with visualization
method. The void fraction data was obtained from image processing of the flow pattern video
using the MATLAB R2014a software. The pressure gradient data was obtained from the MPX
system reading of the pressure drop which was processed using Microsoft Excel software.
From the results of the research that has been carried out, the results obtained are the
identified flow patterns, namely dispersed bubble, plug, slug annular, annular, and churn.
Variables that affect the formation of flow patterns are viscosity, surface tension, and superficial
velocity. In addition to flow patterns, some data obtained from this research are flow pattern
maps, void fraction characteristics and pressure gradient characteristics
