Abstract

Communication skill is important skill for English student to be mastered. By mastering the communication skill they can make a good communication with others, so the message can be delivered as well. To improve students communication skill, there is one of learning methods used in English Education Department (EED) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) namely, group discussion. The purpose of this research is to find out the students perception on the use of group discussion in improving communication skill and students perception on the benefits of group discussion in improving communication skill. This research used the qualitative research design. It uses interview as the tool to collect the data and there are four students of EED, UMY from batch 2015 as interviewee. These participants were selected by using random sampling. The data results were analyzed by using open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The finding shows two main points namely, the students perception about the use of group discussion in improving communication skill and the students perception on the benefit of group discussion in improving communication skill. From those findings, researcher concludes that group discussion is appropriate method to enhance communication skill among students, especially student of EED, UMY.
