Abstract
Background: Stroke is a disease with rapid developing clinical manifestations that is caused
by cerebral dysfunction for greater than 24 hours that could lead to death, among the clinical
manifestations are headache, vomiting, ataxia, paresis, and paralysis. Paresis is declining of
muscle or motor strength. In 2013 stroke was the second highest cause of deaths worldwide.
Blood pressure is the pressure of circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels. Hypertension
is one of the risk factors of stroke that could be modified. According to JNC 8, hypertension is
when the systolic blood pressure is ≥140 or the diastolic blood pressure ≥90. Hypertension is
reported to be found in 77% of first stroke. According to American Heart Association stroke is
the lead cause of long term disability and the main cause of disability that could be prevented.
Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted on 59 patients of acute stroke that is admitted
to the hospital through the emergency room from January to September 2019. Blood pressure
and the degree of motoric strength of each extremity were taken from the medical record of the
patient and then analysed using Spearman’s correlation to find the correlation between
admitted blood pressure and motoric strength of acute stroke patients.
Result: There is no correlation between admitted blood pressure and the motoric strength in
acute stroke in all extremities. Blood pressure and right upper extremity p = 0.968, blood
pressure and left upper extremity p = 0.816, blood pressure and lower right extremity p = 0.861,
blood pressure and lower left extremity p = 0.946.
Conclusion: Admitted blood pressure has no correlation with the degree of motoric strength
of acute stroke patient. The degree of motoric strength could possibly be determined by the
location of the lesion and/or the size of the lesion.
