Abstract
The wound in the socket after tooth extraction will physiologically undergo a
wound healing process. The process of wound healing in a tooth socket consists of 3
phases consisting of the hemostasis and inflammation phase, the proliferation phase,
and the remodeling phase. Complications that can occur after tooth extraction can
significantly affect the quality of life of the patients undergoing the procedure. These
things encourage various studies in the field of Dentistry to look for materials that can
accelerate the wound healing process. In accelerating wound healing, it is necessary
to consume material and nutrients in damaged tissue areas. Curcumin compounds in
turmeric are believed to be able to increase the number of macrophage cells in the
wound healing process which is a key element in human immunity which plays an
important role in first-line defense against pathogens and modulates the inflammatory
response. But the over giving of the curcumin in turmeric can cause a toxicity effect on
the tissue. The good effect will be achieved at a concentration of 5 μM curcumin that
is non-cytotoxic, a concentration of 10 μM curcumin is subcytotoxic, a concentration
of 20 μM curcumin is cytotoxic, and at a concentration of 30 µM curcumin is
clastogenic. Therefore the purpose of this Literature Review is to obtain information
about the possibility of the effectiveness of curcumin on the number of macrophage
cells in the process of wound healing after tooth extraction.
