Abstract

Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) is reported as the most common and most frequent gynecological complaint. It causes female adolescence or adult woman absent from their school, workplace, or other activities. There are two types of dysmenorrhea, primary and secondary; however, primary dysmenorrhea is the most common one. It occurs in about 50% of women population and mostly happens in their youth. Stress is a prominent factor in the occurrence of dysmenorrhea. Adolescence is known as storm and stress period where emotional fluctuation goes in line with rapid physical and varied psychological development. There are many stressors which may take place among teenagers, as well as among female residents at University Residence in Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta 2011. This research aims to observe the relationship between stress and the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea among female residents at University Residence in Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta 2011. It was a non-experimental and descriptive analytic research with cross sectional design. Subjects of the research were female residents in batch 2011 lived in the University Residence, Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. The number of samples in this research was 159 residents who were selected with purposive sampling technique. It was conducted in March 2012. The researcher used questionnaire in collecting the data and Spearman Rank correlation analysis in analyzing the data. The result of the research shows that among the female residents at University Residence in Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta, stress occurred is in severe level (41.5%) and the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea is in moderate level (42.1%). In addition, there is relation between the occurrence of stress and primary dysmenorrhea among the female residents at University Residence in Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta with Spearman Rank correlation value of 0.651 and p value = 0.000. Hence, it shows that there is a significant relation; the more severe the level of stress, the worse the primary dysmenorrhea among the female residents at University Residence in Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta 2011.
