Abstract

Burn is a condition that can susceptible to infection, especially if wound management is not appropriate conducted. Using drugs which made from chemicals to treat burns has many side effects, especially in long-term use. This is one reason to turn using traditional medicine with the basic ingredients of herbs. Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) has long been used as food and medicine. One part of the plant that has potential as burn treatment is the seed. The content of alkaloids and flavonoids in tamarind seeds have the ability to repair cells damaged by injury. Extracts produced from tamarind seeds were made to be an ointment to facilitate it and for easy to used. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the methanol extract ointment tamarind seeds to be seen from burns healing time and its diameter. This study is a purely experimental research in the test animals. A total of 15 white rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into 5 groups, they are negative control, positive control with bioplacenton treatment, the group that treated with methanol extracted ointment of tamarind seeds with concentration 20%, 25% and 50%. Burns induced with a special tool which has 2 cm of diameter for 5 seconds. Wound measurements made with a ruler before providing the appropriate treatment group. Treatment was administered once daily at a dose of 0,3 ml. The time needed to heal the wounds analyzed by one way Annova test followed by post hoc test (Tukey). Average recovery time on 27 days on negative control group, 26 days on positive control, 20 days on ointment methanol extract of tamarind seeds 20%, 17 days on ointment methanol extract of tamarind seeds 25 %, and the last is ointments 2 methanol extract of tamarind seeds 50% need 23 days. Lubrication with methanol extract ointment 20%, 25% and 50% can treat burns faster than the positive control group and negative control group. The methanol extract ointment of tamarind seeds with 25 % concentration is resulting the fastest recovery time
