Abstract

The level of serum uric acid is shown to be varied on hypothyroidism. Some research on hypothyroid and gouty patient even show a hyperuricemia condition. The aim of this research is to measure the level of serum uric acid on hypothyroid and non-hypothyroid breastfeeding women in iodine deficiency disorder endemic area. The subjects of this research are divided into two groups, group 1 as trial group which consist of 12 hypothyroid breasfeeding women while group 2 as control group consist of 13 non-hypothyroid breastfeeding women. fT4 test was used to determine the thyroid status of the breastfeeding women. Serum sample of each subject from both groups were taken for uric acid measurement. The uric acid measurement uses THBA photometric method in laboratory. The mean result of the trial group is 3.63 ± 1.189 mg/dL, whereas the mean result of the control group is 2.81 ± 0.540 mg/dL. The data is tested with Independent Sample T-Test. Statistic result of the Independent Sample T-Test shows a significant difference of serum uric acid level between hypothyroid and non-hypothyroid subjects (p=0,034). It confirms that hypothyroid breastfeeding women in Ngargosoko, Srumbung have higher serum uric acid level than non-hypothyroid breastfeeding women in the same area. The causal of this result is the effect of hypothyroidism on pre-renal and direct renal function thus depleting the excretion of uric acid. However there are unknown factor that make the uric acid level doesn’t exceed normal border in the hypothyroid subjects. In conclusion, the serum uric acid level on hypothyroid breastfeeding women in iodine deficiency disorder endemic area is higher than non-hypothyroid breastfeeding women in the same area.
