Abstract
This research is a quantitative correlation design with two variables. The first variable is vocabulary learning strategy. The second variable is reading ability. The instruments are questionnaire and the score of students’ English Proficiency Test taken at Language Training Center of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The result of the questionnaire and English Proficiency Test score was analyzed by using SPSS 20. The mean of the English Proficiency Test show that the reading ability of the students’ batch 2011 of English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta is in middle category because the mean of the reading core of the students is 39. There are four strategies that was used frequently by students of English Education Departement batch 2011 Univesitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The strategies are: highlighting strategy, taking note strategy, using resources strategy, and repeating strategy. The computations show that the coefficient correlation between vocabulary learning strategy and reading ability is moderate (0,413). So that it can be conclude that there is a relationship between vocabulary learning strategy and reading ability.
