Abstract
TOEFL is used to measure students’ ability in mastering English. This study
aims at finding out the challenges in the TOEFL reading comprehension test. The
research question proposed in this study is “what are the challenges faced by students
in reading comprehension TOEFL test”. The researcher used qualitative design. The
participants of this study involved three students in one Private University in
Yogyakarta. The researcher chooses an open ended question in order to make the
participants comfortable. The data from the interview were analyzed by coding. The
result of this study shows there are four challenges found by the students in the
TOEFL reading comprehension test. The challenges namely that students have lack
of ability to understand the reading passages, time constraint, limited vocabulary
mastery, and difficulty to understanding long sentence.
