Abstract
Background: Smoking disturb and cause pathological problems in one part of
the oral cavity. It causes disruption in the mouth because the oral cavity is a part
which very easily exposed to the effects of smoking. Oral health disorders also
reduce the Salivary Flow Rate (SFR) and salivary pH. Saliva is one of the oral
defense systems to assist the digestive process, protect the mouth, remineralize
teeth, antibacterial, maintain pH balance in cavities, and increase the growth of
bacteria in cavities. Saliva plays an important role in the oral health status,
condition of the lips, tongue, gums and tissues of the mouth.
Research Objective: To determine the oral health status, SFR and salivary pH
in smoker
Research Methods: This research is a quantitative descriptive research using a
cross sectional approach. This research conducted with 80 participant which
selected by purposive sampling. The Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT) is
used to determine the oral health statues, syringes, and timers to measure SFR
and pH meter to measure salivary pH.
The results: The results of the assessment using the OHAT instrument showed
that most participant had a healthy oral health status (93.8%) with mean ± SD
2,85±1,21. The most SFR in smoker quite low (42,5%) with mean ± SD 0,15
±0,04 and almost participant had normal salivary pH (46,3%) with mean ± SD
6,88 ± 0,13.
Conclusion: The results of oral health assessment using the Oral Health
Assessment Tool (OHAT) in young adults’ smokers having normal category,
low SFR and normal salivary pH.
