Abstract
Background: Surgical procedures that involves anasthetic could cause a complication of
the digestive tract that is called as postoperative illeus (POI). POI complicates patient’s
recovery and prolonged the stay period at hospital. One of the most common intervention
to prevent POI is early-postoperative feeding (EPF) to stimulate gastrointestinal motility
that will prevent POI, but EPF is considered to be unsafe according to several studies.
Because of the disadvatage of EPF, some studies seek an alternative to EPF, one of it is
postoperative chewing gum.
Objective: To test the effectiveness of chewing gum to stimulate gastrointestinal motility on
postoperative patients of PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital.
Method: The research utilized quasi-experimental design with post test control group. The
research’s samples are 30 postoperative patients of PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping
Hospital. Samples were taken with probability sampling technique with purposive sampling
approach. The effectiveness of chewing gum to stimulate gastrointestinal motility were
determined by comparing the time record of first bowel sound were heard between
intervention group and control group.
Result: The result shown that there is a significance of chewing gum intervention to
stimulate gastrointestinal motility. Mean time of first bowel sound heard of intervention
group (2,0073 ± 0,07695) is shorter compared to control group (2,3613 ± 0,33006).
Comparison between mean time of intervention and control group show
significance with p value = 0,02 (p<0,05 indicate significance).
Conclusion: Chewing gum intervention is effective to stimulate gastrointestinal
motility on postoperative patient.
