Abstract

Patients with musculoskeletal disorders have a very
significant risk of deterioration that can result in atrophy or
permanent paralysis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In
pandemic Covid-19, restrictions on patient visits and the fear
to go to health services have a big impact on patients with
musculoskeletal disorders because they do not checkup and
undergo therapy according to the planned schedule. In
addition to pharmacological therapy, non-pharmacological
therapy has been studied to be effective in patients with
musculoskeletal disorders. The purpose of this study was to
determine the types and methods of complementary therapy for
patients with musculoskeletal disorders. The research design
used was a scoping review. The keywords used were
"Complementary medicine OR medicine alternative OR
medicine complementary OR therapy complementary AND
Musculoskeletal Problems OR orthopaedic disorders OR
musculoskeletal disease". The population of journals was
obtained through online journal searches on PubMed,
ProQuest, Google Scholar. Samples were taken randomly from
the population with valid source criteria and discussed the
types and methods of complementary therapy for patients with
musculoskeletal disorders. The inclusion criteria for articles
were articles with a time span of 5 years, starting from 2015-
2020, in English and Indonesian, original research articles,
viii
RCT research design and full text availability. We found 641
articles in the PubMed database, 1,700 Google Scholar, and
1,580 ProQuest. Then we filtered again using the categories
selected according to the inclusion criteria and found 21
articles that matched our requirements. The results of the
search and study show that there are 3 out of 4 types of
complementary therapies that we found based on the theory we
used in this study, including mind-body medicine, biologicalbased practice, manipulation and body-based practice.
Complementary therapeutic methods that are useful for
musculoskeletal disorders including the type of mind-body
medicine, biological-based practice, manipulation and bodybased practice.
