Abstract

Background: Hope is an important element in the treatment of cancer patients. Cancer
patients with a high level of expectation will help them avoid physical and
psychological stress. Nurses need to identify and assess patient expectations and use
appropriate instrument to support clinical assessment and treatment.
Purpose: The aims of this study was to explore and synthesize scientific literature about
instruments to measure hope in patients with cancer.
Design: This study adopted a scoping review study framework, using electronic
databases including PubMed, Pyscinfo and CINAHL using search keywords: Hope OR
hope scale AND cancer patients OR oncology patient OR patient with cancer AND
measurement tool OR assessment tool.
Result: 13 pepper has been found, there are 4 instruments that can be used to measure
the hope of cancer patients: Herth Hope Index (HHI) , Herth hope scale (HHS), Adult
Hope Scale (AHS), AG Hope Enhancement Instrument (HEI) and Test to Measure
Hope in the Health Context (NCN-36) by B.L. Block Instrument hope. The instrument
most widely used to measure hope is HHI with 10 papper which uses this instrument
especially in adult patients
Conclusion: HHI is one of the hope instruments that are most used in adult cancer
patients. There are not too many items in this instrument and the questions are global.
Needs a more in-depth review to examine in more detail and complete the use of this
instrument
