Abstract

Welding dissimilar metals between stainless steel and low carbon steel is
increasingly being applied because of the demands of design and economic demands.
The problems faced in union of two different materials are different melting points,
coefficient of expansion, physical and mechanical properties of metals. Then research
needs to be done to determine the physical and mechanical properties. In this study, the
welding process uses; Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) direct current (DC)
reversed polarity with the E6013 electrode, a diameter of 2.5 mm. Sample preparation
is carried out by making a 70 ° welding angle. Welding current varies namely; 80A,
90A and 100A. The characterization of mechanical properties is obtained from testing
the physical and mechanical properties obtained from tensile testing, hardness testing,
and microstructure testing.
The highest tensile strength results of the weld joint for the weld area it's in the
100 Ampere specimen group, which is 513.87 MPa. The highest yield strength it's in
the 100 Ampere specimen group, which is 414,21 MPa. The highest level of hardness
it's in the 100 Ampere specimen group, which is 412.1 MPa in the Heat Affected Zone
(HAZ) of stainless steel. The results of the HAZ blood micro structure on stainless steel
experienced a large increase grain along with the addition of the amperes used and the
hardness value more increased, whereas for HAZ area carbon steel has the highest
hardness value in 80 Ampere. this can be seen in the micro structure looks softer than
compared variations of welding current other. corresponding to results of the study it
can be concluded that with variation welding current occur structure changes caused
cooling so that it affects the strength of the material namely that an increase in the base
material.
