Abstract
Background: Antibiotics are drugs used to treat infections caused by bacteria. The
use of antibiotics is one of the most important factors causing antibiotic resistance
worldwide. The irrational use of antibiotics results in increased hospital costs and
increased toxicity. Therefore it is necessary to evaluate the use of therapeutic
antibiotics qualitatively using the Gyssens algorithm method. Objective: Knowing
the qualitative evaluation of antibiotic therapy according to the Gyssens algorithm
in internal medicine ward patients at Yogyakarta City Hospital for the period
January - July 2019. Methods: This research method is a descriptive observational
study with a cross-sectional approach. This study used secondary data
retrospectively in the form of medical records of internal medicine ward patients at
Yogyakarta City Hospital who were treated from January 1, 2019 to July 31, 2019.
Results: The use of antibiotics based on the Gyssens category obtained rational
antibiotics or (category 0) of (54, 92%) and irrational use (category I - V) of
(45.08%) consisting of: category II B (inappropriate use of antibiotics at the
interval of administration) (2.27%), category II A (use of antibiotics inaccurate
dose) of (4.54%), category III B (use of antibiotics too short) of (18.18%), category
IV A (There are other more effective antibiotics) of (8.71%), category V (No
indication for use of antibiotics) (11.36%). Conclusion: The qualitative evaluation
of the use of antibiotic therapy in internal medicine ward patients in Yogyakarta
City Hospital for the period January - July 2019 is rational according to the
Gyssens algorithm.
