THE USE OF CODE SWITCHING IN TEACHER-STUDENTS COMMUNICATION AT CLASS XI IN SMA MUHAMMADIYAH KASIHAN BANTUL

Code switching is commonly used by teachers in language classrooms. The English teacher of SMA Muhammadiyah Kasihan Bantul also used code switching in the teaching and learning process. This research aimed to find out the types of code switching used by the English teacher and to identify the factors of using code switching in the classroom. To collect the data, the researcher observed one female English teacher in using code switching during teaching and learning process in the classrooms. The researcher used video recorder to record the Teacher-Students communication happened in class XI of SMA Muhammadiyah Kasihan Bantul.Then, the researcher used Conversation Analysis (CA) to analyze the data. In teacher-Students communication, it was found that the types of code switching were intern code switching and extern code switching. Intern code switching included the code switching from Bahasa Indonesia into Javanese and the code switching from Javanese into bahasa Indonesia while extern code switching were the code switching from Bahasa Indonesia into English and the code switching from English into Bahasa Indonesia. Related to the factors of using code switching, it was found that the English teacher switched the language because of several factors. The factors included the factors of speaker, hearer, change of topic, controlling students, clarifying misunderstanding, building relationship, introducing the meaning of concept of words, showing solidarity, and making the students understand easier.
