Abstract

The purpose of this study were to determine whether delaying surgical treatment with open reduction and internal .fixation (ORIF) influences the rate of surgical site infection (SSI) in the fracture patient caused by Yogyakarta earthquakes in 2006.
This case control study included total of 68 skeletally mature patient to whom a fracture had been treated with ORIF and who had been followed clinically for a minimum of 1 year. The patients were divided into 2 groups: those treated with early fixation (within 10 days after injury), and those treated with delayed fixation (more than 10 days after injury). SSI outcomes were assessed with using the CDC criteria of SSI 1992. The rates of SSI were compared between the two groups. Data statistically tested by Pearson Chi-Square.
The incidence of SSI after internal fracture fixation in this study is 52.9%. SSI rates for patient treated within 10 days of injury was 45.8%, and for fracture treated more than 10 days was 70.0%. No significant statistical difference in SSI rate with delay in surgical treatment was found (p = 0.069).
Although delayed surgical treatment of fractures was showed higher rate of SSI, there is no correlation between the delay in surgical treatment (ORIF) and the rate of SSI.
