Abstract

Background: Denture cleansing is an important thing in daily denture maintenance by patients. Denture cleansing can be done both mechanically and chemically. Mechanical cleansing can remove extrinsic stains by brushing teeth, but mechanical cleansing can cause abrasion of the denture which can increase surface roughness. Chemical cleansing can also remove stains on dentures through the mechanical action of oxygen bubbles on alkaline peroxide tablets, but their strong oxidizing ability can cause surface roughness. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences between mechanical and chemical cleansing groups on the surface roughness of acrylic resin artificial teeth after immersion in coffee solution. Methods: Acrylic resin artificial teeth with a total sample of 30 were divided into 3 groups. The control group was immersed into the coffee solution and cleaned using distilled water. Group B was given treatment in the form of immersion in coffee solution and mechanical cleansing. Group C was given treatment in the form of immersion in coffee solution and chemical cleansing. Then, the surface roughness of the sample was measured using a Surfcorder SE 1700 brand profilometer. The data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA. Results: The average value of surface roughness in the chemical group with an average value of 3.3295 µm, followed by the mechanical group with an average value of 3.2852 µm and then the control group with an average value of 2.8382 µm. One Way ANOVA hypothesis test was found that the value of p = 0.468 (sig: p> 0.05) Conclusion: There was no significant difference between cleaning groups.
