Abstract

Background: Gingivitis is inflammation of the soft tissue supporting the teeth caused by plaque bacteria. Gingivitis is one of the most common oral diseases in adults. Treatments that can be taken to prevent bacteria from multiplying and exacerbating inflammation include chemically. Chemical treatment in the form of mouthwash such as chlorhexidine, continuous use of chlorhexidine mouthwash will cause negative effects on the body, such as allergic effects, irritation of the oral cavity, discomfort, discoloration of the oral mucosa and teeth. An alternative medicine is needed to cure gingivitis such as the pseudo stem of the Ambon banana. The pseudo stem of Ambon banana contains flavonoids, saponins and tannins that can reduce the number of lymphocyte cells in curing gingivitis. Research Purpose: To determine the effect of applying ambon banana pseudo stem extract gel on the number of lymphocyte in the cure of gingivitis. Material and Method: This study is an in vivo laboratory experimental study with a posttest control group. The study used 45 Sprague-Dawley rats which were divided into 3 groups, namely the positive control group (chlorhexidine gel), negative control (gel base) and treatment (ambon banana pseudo stem extract gel). The rat's mandibular incisor gingiva was ligated and injected with Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria until gingivitis occurred, then gel was applied to the rat's gingiva. Decapitation of rats was carried out on days 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, then made histological preparations with Hemaktocin Eosin staining and observations were made. Result: The Shapiro-Wilk test showed that the number of lymphocyte cells between groups showed significant results (p>0.05) from the three treatment groups based on the action. Kruskal-Wallis test in the day group showed a significant difference with a value of sig=0.016 (sig<0.05). Conclusion: The pseudo stem extract gel of Ambon banana which was applied to the Sprague-Dawley rat group had an effect on reducing the number of lymphocyte cells in the treatment of gingivitis.
