Abstract

Background: Micronutrient intake consists of vitamins and minerals which are nutrients needed by the body in sufficient quantities. Nutrients are needed to support the immune system to function optimally. The immune system is a natural defense by the human body to prevent infection by viruses and bacteria. Objective: This study aimed to determine the correlation between micronutrient intake and nutritional status with the immune system during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: The design of this research is analytic observational with a cross-sectional approach. This research was conducted on 89 Dentistry Students at UMY Class 2018. The assessment of micronutrient intake using a 24-Hour Food Recall Form, nutritional status using BMI data and the immune system using the Immune System Questionnaire (ISQ). Result: The results showed that the consumption of vitamins and minerals in the over category was vitamin A at 40.45% and zinc at 5.62%. The highest consumption of vitamins and minerals in the sufficient category is vitamin B2 by 15.73% and zinc (Zn) by 20.22%. The most consumption of vitamins and minerals in the less category is vitamin B1 at 98.88% and Calcium at 94.38%. Most of the respondents were categorized as having normal nutritional status, which was 65.17%. There was no decrease in the immune system in most of the subjects with a percentage of 75.28%. The results of the correlation test showed p value < 0.05 for micronutrient intake with the immune system and p value > 0.05 for nutritional status with the immune system. Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between micronutrient intake and the immune system and there is a significant correlation between nutritional status and the immune system.
