Abstract
The pre-service teachers might encounter difficulties in teaching vocabulary during their teaching practicum and pre-service teachers have to understand the students need in learning vocabulary to find effective strategies to overcome the difficulties they have faced. The purpose of this research is to find out the difficulties in teaching vocabularies and the strategies to overcome the difficulties by the pre-service teachers. This research conducted at English Language Education Department of Private Universities at Yogyakarta and involved three students’ batch 2018 who had experiences in teaching vocabulary during the internship program. This research used qualitative as research method and descriptive qualitative as the research design. Interviews were use to collect the data. The finding of this research showed that there were some difficulties faced and some strategies implemented by pre-service teacher. The difficulties are teaching online during the COVID-19 pandemic, uninteresting teaching strategies, students low language ability, time constraint, and poor class management. The strategies implemented by pre-service to overcome the difficulties are using interesting strategies, using multimedia teaching items, metacognitive strategies, mnemonics strategy, giving rewards, adjust bearing to their students, small group learning, reading a short story, use picture and colors and online platform in teaching process that are effective on students’ vocabulary achievement. Most of the result of this study based on the pre-service teachers experience during the internship program.
