Abstract
Background: Removable denture is one of the treatments that can be used for edentulous cases. One of the materials that are commonly used is thermoplastic nylons. Some hospital studies stated that 65% of removable denture problems come from Candida albicans. The cleansing process of the removable denture can be performed well by mechanical or chemical cleansing. Ocimum Sanctum Linn leaves contains essential oils, flavonoid, tannin, alkaloid, and saponin which can be an anti-fungal agent to Candida albicans. Methods: 30 samples of 10×10×1mm thermoplastic nylon bases was divided into 5 groups, which are basil extracts groups with the concentration of 12,5%, 25%, and 50%, a negative control group that has been submerged with aquadest for 6 hours, and a positive control group that has been submerged in chlorhexidine for 15 minutes. Samples were processed with Total Plate Count (TPC). Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: Mean rank scores of the fungi on chlorhexidine, aquadest, and basil leaf extract concertation of 12,5%, 25%, and 50% respectively 6,08, 27,33, 19,17, 15,58, and 9,33 with significancy 0,000 (p<0,05). Conclusion: Basil leaf extract has an effect on Candida albicans growth.
