Abstract

Background: In 2020 the world was faced with Covid-19 pandemic, the transmission of which could spread from human to human. The pandemic had an effect on changes in skills lab activities at the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Dentistry Study Program which were previously carried out faceto- face and then turned online. Research Objectives: To determine the perception of students of the Dentistry Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta on online skills lab activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods: The type of research this was a qualitative with a phenomenological design. The data were obtained through in-depth interviews with interview guides in the form of curriculum, students, instructors, facilities and infrastructure, guidebooks, governance and time allocation to 5 informants. The data were analyzed and presented by the researcher. Result: This study resulted in three themes: 1. Student views on online skills labs; 2. Implementation of online skills lab; 3. Supporting online skills lab activities. Student feel that the material given before the skills lab is sufficient and appropriate. Student are still motivated to study independently before the online skills lab activity, but student are not enthusiastic about participating in the online skills lab because it is boring. The instructor during the explanation of the online skills lab material was clear enough, but the instructor's supervision during the online skills lab decreased and there were differences in perception in teaching. Student complain that the online skills lab schedule and pretest/posttest questions are often inappropriate. Student complained about the delay in the distribution of skills lab tools and materials. Student assume that the online skills lab guidebook is good. Another problem that is often experienced by students and instructors is the internet network Conclusion: Student assume that the implementation of online skills labs still has limitations and shortcomings, therefore necessary to improve and deal with problems during online skills lab activities so that standard competency and skills lab goals are achieved optimally and maximally.
