Abstract
Background: Patients with diabetes mellitus have a high prevalence of lesions on the oral mucosa. Wound healing process in diabetic patients is often delayed and causes infection. It is associated with various changes in connective tissue metabolism. Collagen is one of the important components in the wound healing process which has an important role in the formation of the extracellular matrix (ECM). One of the herbal ingredients that have the potential to accelerate wound healing is Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii). Cinnamon has a high polyphenol content, so it is hoped that this gel with cinnamon extract has the potential to accelerate the wound healing process. Objective: To determine the effect of cinnamon extract (Cinnamomum burmannii) on increasing collagen density in the wound healing process in the oral mucosa in diabetic rats. Methods: 36 male wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) aged 2-3 months were induced with alloxan at a dose of 150 mg/kgBW after being fasted overnight. Traumatic ulcers were prepared chemically by applying 30% H202 to the lower labial mucosa of mice. The samples were divided into 4 groups, namely the treatment group (cinnamon extract gel), placebo group (gel base), positive control group (Aloclair gel), and negative control group (aquadest), each group was applied topically twice a day for one minute. Observations were made on days 3, 7, and 14. Collagen density was assessed by scoring the histological preparations with 3 fields of view in each sample preparation. Double-blind assessment to reduce bias in the assessment. Results: the results of data analysis with Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney U, namely there was a significant difference in collagen density in each test group (p <0.05) on the 7th day of observation. Conclusion: Cinnamon extract gel had an effect on increasing collagen density but not better than the positif control group (Aloclair gel).
