Abstract
Background: Tooth discoloration occurs due to compounds that have a darker or pattern or are called chromogens. Tooth bleaching is a process to brighten teeth which done by removing stains, both physically or chemically. The most used home bleaching agent is 10% carbamide peroxide. The process of whitening teeth can cause side effects on hard tissue, mucosa, and tooth sensitivity. Alternative therapy for tooth bleaching can be done with natural ingredients such as gold kiwifruit which has high content of ascorbic acid. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference of effectiveness between 100% gold kiwifruit extract (Actinidia chinensis) with 10% carbamide peroxide in tooth bleaching. Methods: This type of research is an experimental laboratory in vitro with pretestposttest control group design. The research sample consisted of 27 premolars which were stained with black tea and then divided into three groups so that each consisted of 9 samples. Group 1 was immersed in 10% carbamide peroxide, group 2 was immersed in 100% gold kiwifruit extract and group 3 was immersed in artificial saliva. Tooth discoloration in the samples was measured using spectrophotometer Shimadzu UV 1240 and the result were tested by Shapiro Wilk, One Way Anova and Post Hoc Bonferroni. Results: The results of the normality test showed p-value>0,05 which means that the distribution of the data is normal. The results of the homogeneity test showed p-value>0,05, which means that the distribution of the data is homogeneous. One Way Anova test showed p-value<0,05, which means that there was a significant difference between the sample groups. Conclusion: There is a difference in the effectiveness of 100% gold kiwifruit extract and 10% carbamide peroxide in tooth bleaching.
