Abstract

Preschooler are prone to caries. One of the factors that affect incidence of caries in children is the consumption of formula milk. Cariogenicity of formula milk directly depends on pattern and method of how it is given. This study aims to determine effect of formula milk consumption based on the pattern and method of how it is given toward the incidence of primary dental caries.. This was an analytic observational study with case control design. Subjects were students of KB-TK Islam Al Azhar 31 Yogyakarta & 38 Bantul aged 3-5 years old at the last dental examination. Subject selection used purposive sampling technique, 15 people in each case group and control group. Information regarding caries status was obtained from medical records, while information regarding pattern and method of formula milk consumption was obtained through questionnaire. Data analyzed with Chi-square and Odds Ratio. Results showed that there was an effect of duration (p=0.014; OR=16) and added sugar (p=0.027; OR=8), and there was no effect of length (p=0.062; OR=6), frequency (p=0.067; OR=5.5), consumption time (p=0.067; OR=5.5) and used of pacifier (p=0.714; OR=1.714) on the incidence of primary dental caries. Pattern and method of formula milk consumption such as duration and sugar addition significantly affect the incidence of primary dental caries, while length, frequency, consumption time and use of pacifiers do not affect the incidence of primary dental caries in KB-TK Islam Al Azhar 31 Yogyakarta & 38 Bantul significantly.
