Abstract
Background: Congenital hypothyroidism causes disturbances in thyroid function. Katuk leaf is used as a breast milk launcher which has an influence on spatial memory and children's anxiety levels. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of giving katuk leaf decoction to mother rats during lactation on TSH and fT4 levels, spatial memory and anxiety levels in congenital hypothyroid rats. Method: The method of this research is experimental post test and controlled group design. The research subjects were normal and congenital hypothyroidism rats obtained from Sprague Dawley rats whose drink was given 15 ppm PTU starting on the 6th day of pregnancy until weaning. Subjects were divided into 4 groups, namely the normal group, given a normal valve, congenital hypothyroidism, and congenital hypothyroidism given a valve. Each group contains 8 mice. Giving decoction of katuk leaves to the mother at a dose of 2.16ml/200gBB/day started after 4 births until weaning. Open Field Test at 33 days of age and Morris Water Maze starting at 35 days of age. Measurement of TSH and fT4 levels using the ELISA method. Result: Giving decoction of katuk leaves had no effect on TSH and fT4 levels in normal or congenital hypothyroidism rats (p<0.05). In Morris Water Maze, offering katuk leaves was given significant latency time, latency time, retention when combined with PTU administration (p<0.05). In the Open Field Test, time in the middle box and the number of passes of katuk rats increased significantly (p<0.05). Conclusion: The effect of giving katuk leaves did not worsen thyroid function in normal or PTU-treated rats, tended to worsen spatial memory and increase courage in congenital hypothyroidism rats.
